Tanzanian students learn in classrooms where the teacher-to-pupil ratio can reach 1 to 150. The students have almost no visual aids and no books. Teaching and Learning through Photography has developed a methodology using affordable but effective visual tools that are linked to the national curriculum. The colorful posters, made with students and teachers and designed with Katy Homans, have been of tremendous benefit to teachers and students in these tough environments.
Teaching and Learning through Photography will become an integral part of the curriculum in education for student teachers at the University of Dodoma, one of the largest public universities in Tanzania. The plan is to train all 10,000 education students who attend UDOM in TLTP methodology and equip them with their own sets of posters and materials.
